SEED CARRIERS

News       Listen      Stories      Newsletter      About

Dedicated to bridging artistic practice and activism, SEED CARRIERS seeks to engage a wide and diverse public. To this end, we have developed listening stations that can be integrated into art exhibitions as well as presented in community contexts such as seed swaps and public gatherings.

Alongside more abstract artistic reflections on cultivated diversity – such as our member Alexandra Baumgartner’s photographic work  – SEED CARRIERS offers information and depth. The listening station allows us to reintroduce the sounds of gardens and fields of diversity, together with the voices of seed stewards, growers, researchers, and scientists featured in the audio pieces. In doing so, SEED CARRIERS reconnects aesthetic inquiry with the material and social realities of seed work.

Our first listening station was developed for the exhibition How like a leaf I am by Alexandra Baumgartner at Photoforum (14 September – 24 November 2024).
The SEED CARRIERS listening station will also be presented as part of Alexandra Baumgartner’s contribution to the exhibition Seeds. Reclaiming Roots, Sowing Futures at KunstHausWien Museum Hundertwasser (9 April 2026 – 14 February 2027). The exhibition forms part of Vienna’s second Klimabiennale and features artists including Ackroyd & Harvey, Maria Thereza Alves, Alexandra Baumgartner, Tue Greenfort, Kapwani Kiwanga, Dominique Koch, Jumana Manna, Christian Kosmas Mayer, Marzia Migliora, Lucía Pizzani, Michaela Putz, Cecilia Vicuña, and Munem Wasif.

More broadly, the listening station is conceived as an invitation to cultural institutions who wish to reach beyond the exhibition space into the realm of advocacy for seed diversity.
